What is Masa Depan Energi (MDE) Initiative?

Masa Depan Energi (MDE) or The Future of Energy is an initiative by International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in collaboration with World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, Katadata, and Indonesian Business Council. The MDE Initiative aims to promote using data and in-depth scientific studies in dialogue with stakeholders and policy makers in the area of energy transition, in order to achieve data-based collaborative decisions and actions.

Background

Indonesia is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and has set Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of up to 29% emission reduction by 2030. Indonesia later increased its ambition by setting the NDC target to 32% and to achieve Net-Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060.

To achieve this ambition, Indonesia will have to embark on energy transition plan. Energy transition requires policy intervention which is not only applicable, but also take into consideration the different dynamics of the energy sector and other influencing factors such as climate change, finite natural resources, technological developments and market changes.

What We Do

MDE Initiative believes in the critical importance of data and thorough analysis to develop an energy transition plan. It creates data and analysis based platform to evaluate different energy transition options based on various variables. In this open data platform, stakeholders and everyone can utilize different scenario for their own energy transition analysis and/or plan.
