Closed-door Roundtable Discussion on Indonesian Migrant Workers with the Coordinating Minister for People’s Empowerment

IBC held a closed-door roundtable discussion with Coordinating Minister for People’s Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar in Jakarta on 17 March 2025 to address strategies for upskilling and expanding opportunities for Indonesia’s migrant workforce. As a follow-up to the Indonesia Economic Summit (IES) 2025, the discussion highlighted the need to transition Indonesia’s overseas workers from predominantly unskilled roles to low and medium-skilled positions, aligning with labor demands in developed and aging markets. Comparisons were drawn to other Southeast Asian countries that have strategically tapped into global job opportunities, emphasizing the urgency for Indonesia to enhance its approach.

IBC members also shared their initiatives in providing training and skill development programs for prospective migrant workers. This effort is expected to not only reduce unemployment but also increase economic contributions. Strengthening collaboration between the public and private sectors will be key to ensuring Indonesian workers are better prepared and more competitive in the global workforce.
