Borneo’s shared geography, natural wealth, and diverse economies give it unique potential to become a sub-regional engine of growth linking Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. While challenges remain—from weak cross-border trade to uneven development—the momentum is shifting. Initiatives such as the Borneo Economic Community (BEC), Sarawak’s push to be a logistics and energy hub, Sabah’s Pan Borneo Highway, and Brunei’s energy diversification highlight a path toward greater connectivity, industrial upgrading, and renewable energy leadership. For Indonesia, especially Kalimantan, stepping up with stronger investment in infrastructure, digitalization, and cross-border partnerships could unlock Borneo’s promise as a flagship for regional cooperation and sustainable growth under Prabowo’s “good neighbor” vision.
